Why Design?
Creating a beautiful outdoor space to satisfy a client's requirements
demands a knowledgeable, multi-disciplinary approach. A good designer
will find the best plants for various situations, choosing plants
which work well together aesthetically. This means avoiding those
expensive, trial-and-error sagas and regular rejection of unsuitable
plants, and applies equally to hard landscaping and construction
details. The garden is no longer considered as an afterthought, the
differences between indoor and outdoor living are becoming blurred
and gardens are now perceived as important lifestyle
elements adding
significant value to houses.
Design Philosophy
Nick's design methodology encompasses an array of styles, whether
traditional or contemporary, from tiny urban spaces to large countryside
gardens
and public amenity spaces. Rather than adhering to a fixed formula
or style, emphasis is placed on relating a design to adjoining buildings,
and a sensitivity to the spirit and character of the setting. Usually,
natural materials are preferred. Whilst modern, synthetic materials
can work well in urban settings it is important to counterbalance
these with natural elements to avoid a feeling of sterility; this
is usually
achieved by selective planting or suggestive imagery in the design.
Important design influences are the free-flowing organic forms present
in the natural landscape, local materials and inspiration from
the world of art. Each design should reflect the tastes and personality
of the client as well as catering for their functional requirements.
